Aeronautical Study on the Hazards of Glare towards Pilots and Control Tower – Photovoltaic Installations

The technical study conducted by our engineering firm focuses on the hazard of glare generated by photovoltaic solar installations. Specifically, we analyze the light reflections produced in directions of aeronautical interest, providing an evaluation of the visual impact.

The solar radiation striking the photovoltaic panel could generate hazardous light reflections towards pilots engaged in approach procedures towards the airport, as well as towards the Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) cabin.

An aeronautical study is a report highlighting the technical and construction data of each individual panel and its installation, the technical data of the entire photovoltaic system (dimensions and energy production), and analyses and assessments regarding the obtained results, emphasizing the absence or presence of potential glare phenomena towards pilots and operators in the control tower cabin.

In particular, photovoltaic installations located in the immediate vicinity of civilian and military airports are subject to evaluation. The risk is that these installations may appear as a 'reflecting mirror' to the eyes of pilots and the control tower, with the potential to impact flying aircraft. Therefore, the responsibility in certifying a photovoltaic system will primarily aim to ensure public safety.

The Aeronautical Study is drafted using approved and certified software from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - U.S. Department of Transportation.

Aeronautical studies are conducted worldwide.

Costs vary on a case-by-case basis and depend on various factors such as the number of runways at the airport, the size and characteristics of the photovoltaic system (presence of one or more tilts or orientations of the modules, or one or more axes of rotation for solar trajectory tracking.

ONE OF OUR PROJECTS

In collaboration with Syspro Engineering, the largest photovoltaic system installed on the roof of an airport was developed, specifically at Turin-Caselle Airport. The system was inaugurated in July 2023.
